Cold Breath of Death
War is a violent act, being deprived of peace. It ruins people and their lives both mentally and physically. It takes lives of people regardless of their age or family. Some leave behind his old parents and some leave his wife or child/ren. For what we fight? For whom? Maybe before joining the war, noone questions the function or aim of war.
In the first quarter of twentieth century, in Britain there was the sense of Englishness, patriotism, glory, honour. They joined the war to achieve these ideals. They were longing for their past glories and wanting to regain it. Poets started to write just to encourage the youth to join the war. They shoul have fought for their nation, Englishness. So we see patriotism in literature, as well. But after joining war, writer’s ideas started to change. They started to disapprove it. They realized that they fought for nothing. War was nothing other than bloodshed and death. So writers wanted to show the reality of war. They tried to correct and reconstruct the truth about war. They explained people the ugliness of war. But they also saw that war didn’t stop because authorities and civilians didn’t want to stop it. They wanted to see heroic actions. Sassoon in his “Glory Of Women” tells about the facts of war. He criticizes women as they encourage their men to join the war. What women did was just sitting near fire and knitting socks, shells for their men. They also thought that soldiers were safe at war. Because they didn’t have any idea about war. Soldiers felt the danger and fear of war but women liked to listen to these danger and horror stories. So in a sense Sassoon blames women. Many soldiers killed themselves because they couldn’t bear that. If they tried to escape, then it would be a shame for them. They would be dishonoured. Noone could understand the psychology of soldiers except themselves. Every moment, a bullet misses them and they have no guarantee of its missing in next second. They may die at any moment. They don’t know whether they will see their families or house again. The only thing that is certain is the certanity of death.
The writers at that age tried to correct the misunderstanding of war. The ideas like immortality, heroism, glory, honour were all lies. They even didn’t know for what they fought. They thought that it was for their country but in fact it was for the benefit of someone.
